5 Things I’m Smitten With 61

Justin’s Almond Butter
With my active lifestyle, I’m always on the go, so sometimes fortifying myself on my feet can be tricky. On the streets of NYC, where a pizza slice is a given, I find myself ferreting around for something wholesome to put in my belly. After much thought, I’ve conjured up my all-time favorite childhood snack, an apple with peanut butter, and gave it 2012 makeover. Thanks to Justin’s (who produces the most divine nut butters), my kiddie nibble is even more nutritious with 6-7 grams of protein per serving, free of gluten, dairy, and trans-fats, and is completely vegetarian, and kosher. Justin, is founder Justin Gold, who started his first batches of gourmet nut butters in his home kitchen with one food processor. Now, you can find his products at Whole Foods, Safeway, or Kroger. You can purchase the 16oz jars for at-home use but I prefer the 1.15oz squeeze packs. I snapped up every flavor, like classic almond, honey almond, maple almond, and chocolate almond, to throw in my bag with an apple. Now that’s something that’ll keep the doctor away!

Tumi Luggage
After Christmas shopping is almost as good as getting gifts under the tree. This year, my Mom and I headed downtown to SoHo to do some damage. We stumbled upon the Tumi store front and wandered in. I’ve always associated Tumi naturally, with luggage. That’s what they do and they do it well. With some of the lightest luggage, one of the first to do 360 degree swivel wheels, a tracer that helps locate lost luggage, and even a comprehensive warranty, they are simply the leader in suitcases- but did you know they also have the loveliest bags, wallets, and accessories? The day we went they were having a killer sale and I got THE best tote with loads of inner pockets for all my stuff (similar to this), a wallet that has more compartments than I can fill (and my last wallet was stuffed!!), and a key chain that has removable hooks and matches my bag. The sales people in the store went above and beyond with service, like sending me a brand new version of my wallet right to my door complete with free shipping. All of my goodies have warranties just like their iconic suitcases, so now I’m not just traveling in style but commuting in it as well.

Sally B’s Skin Yummies
Last edition I mentioned my infatuation with Kimberly Snyder. Besides her food wisdom Kim endorsed only one manufacture of the stuff that goes on after you wash your face, makeup. Sally B’s Skin Yummies is one of the few in the cosmetic industry that is truly organic, hand-crafted, non-toxic, and completely Paraben-free. I ordered Sally’s tinted moisturizer (it feels like smoothie for your skin), and her Get Even Finishing Powder which is a light mineral powder that blots out excess oil and evens out my skin tone. I’ve been using the two together daily and my skin looks flawless and without irritation. The organic nature of these products make my skin feel healthy and don’t irritate my breakouts. Now, a convert, I’m dying to place my next order and try some other products such as her B Glossy Lip Gloss, Herba-pads Underarm Deoderant, and her Natural Buff Cuticle Bar.

Comptoir Des Cotonniers
More Mother and daughter shopping ensued during the holidays, this included my first purchase from Comptoir des Cotonniers. Obviously French, this clothing label is just like a French woman, stylish, sophisticated, a la mode, and ephemeral. Not new on the scene, this brand has been trending since their inception in 1995. Notorious for using un-named models, Comptoir uses real mother/daughter combos for their advertisments- they even have a link to apply to model their digs on the site. Mom, interested in playing dress up? While the price points definitely reflect the luxury of this line, it is worth every penny! I snagged a pair of the most gorgeous high-waisted black cotton blend pants and a classy wool boucle jacket that’s perfect with an oversized scarf. They have pretty hefty sales so their goods can be found on the cheap-er. Bloomingdales has a mini-store version of their relaxed and intimate boutiques, which there are 5 of in NYC. Their spring line is equally to die for and is sporting white tuxedo jackets with hints of lemon. Le sigh….

The New Starbucks App
Well, the java kings have done it again with their newest innovation that enables you to get your coffee in under 10 seconds flat. The newest version of the Starbucks App spotlights the ability to pay for your beverage with your iphone! You can still do all the things you used to with on the previous version of their app like, reload your card, find the nearest Barrista, and track your stars in their rewards program. Just bring up the barcode on your phone, they scan it directly, and voila! You are seconds closer to getting caffeine in your veins. You can thank your local Starbucks.

Nanoosh
Unconsciously, I try to eat vegetarian most of the time. I find that when I do- I feel lighter, look better, and have less digestive issues. So, when I’m being led to a healthy lunch in Manhattan, I pick Nanoosh. Nanoosh is an organic translation of all things mediterranean- Hummus, Tabouleh, Greek Salad with organic veggies, Quinoa, and all-natural meat. My pick is the Hummus Tahini Wrap. It’s creamy hummus, organic greens, tomato, cucumber, and parsley along with a Quinoa salad made of organic raisins, walnuts, and cranberries. It’s served rolled in a whole wheat wrap or as bowl. Perfect light lunch or dinner. They also serve wine and beer so if you need a cheap but cheerful date meal they’ve got your back. Find them at one of their three locations in the city or the one just opened in Paramus, NJ. I was eating my wrap at my desk in the studio the other day and a client remarked how good my meal looked. That’s right- good looking and good for me too.

Who What Wear
Big surprise that I like a good daily email full of things I might might find myself smitten with. Who What Wear is just that email. The brain child of two fashionistas- Hillary Kerr a former associate editor at Elle mag and Katherine Power who also got her start at Elle. These lovelies bring you a daily snapshot of what’s happening in the fashion and beauty world. Wanna know what the latest trends are? Who wore what at that awards show last week? What are the stylish celebrities donning these days? THIS is the email for you. Not annoyingly wordy, full of glossy mag-like pictures- this email is easy to scan and digest so it won’t clog up your inbox or brain. They also have a beauty version which I just signed up for. I’m sure it bolsters my beauty product obsession as well as my Sephora bill. Thank you ladies for creating a visual dream board for my fashion and beauty day dreams.

Dark and Stormy
Although our winter here in NYC has been mild, I love a good warming cocktail for a frosty climate. My client Emma and her beau Patrick had been drinking this libation and warned me I would get hooked. Here’s the recipe via Rachel Ray. The dynamic duo use Gosling’s rum, and I use the yummy Ginger Beer they have at Trader Joe’s. Here’s to keeping warm from the inside out!

Ingredients
Ice
1/4 lime
2 ounces dark rum (recommended: Goslings Black Seal Bermuda Black Rum)
10 ounces of ginger beer (recommended: Milligan’s Island Tropical Mango Ginger Beer)
Lime wedge, for garnish, optional

Directions
Fill a 12-ounce glass with ice. Squeeze the lime wedge over the ice in the glass. Drop the wedge into the glass. Pour the rum into the glass. Add the ginger beer. Stir lightly and garnish with another lime wedge, if desired.

Kimberly Snyder
Don’t you just love it when you ask for something and it simply appears? I have been trying to find a easy non-detox detox for myself since the New Year rolled around. Everything I’ve seen is all about deprivation or excessive preparation and seems like a form of torture. Imagine my bliss when I stumbled upon the mademoiselle of meal planning- Kimberly Snyder. After seeing a short video of this lovely flower, she seemed as easy to digest as her food. A quick visit to her site and I gave my email to her list freely. So far, I’ve gotten two emails- but with so much helpful and usable content I’m not a bit sore. Simple suggestions for changing your diet for the better like hot water with lemon in the am, romaine lettuce roll-ups, and her promise of beauty from the inside out with her glowing green smoothie. Good lookin’ is what’s cookin’ in my kitchen.

Capri Blue Candle
Oh let me count the reasons I love Anthropologie. One one thousand, two one thousand…three chic-candles-that-smell-divine one thousand. This scent, Volcano (a mix of tropical fruit, sugared citrus, touched by exotic mountain greens) is THE scent of that Anthropolgie store you’ve visited. For years I sniffed the air and sighed at the romantic warmness that the candles in the store provided. I finally took home one in a glass blue jar and have never looked back. When they started making it in a gorgeous mercury glass version I turned into a complete devotee. Now monthly, I get a supply of these so that I can have one burning in my studio at all times. Easy glamour. Instant ambiance.

5 Things I’m Smitten With 59

New Balance New Sky Sneakers
I don’t know about you but I’m always looking for small ways that I can live a little more green. I do the obvious- take my own bags to the supermarket, recycle, and use biodegradable cleaners. So, when I heard that New Balance had created a shoe made out of recycled materials, I was anxious to try them out. Uber light, these sneaker’s uppers are made entirely of post consumer plastic bottles! Did you know that two million plastic bottles are used in the U.S. every ten minutes? Well, New Balance has found a brilliant use for them- these New Sky Sneakers. Each pair uses 8 bottles that are washed and chopped into tiny flakes. The flakes are melted down and pulled into tiny holes that create the shape of the filament, then formed into strands, stretched over heated rollers, crimped, and eventually made into fabric. The result is a stylish grey upper with completely recycled laces, with just a tad of water based glue to attach the brightly colored soles. I got mine at the new store front in the Flatiron, but you can grab yours online or at a store in your hood. The best part is you can recycle them when you’re done. Finally my feet can make a difference too!

Open Sky
I am a admitted shopaholic, that comes from a long line of shopaholics. I have to steer myself away from entering stores as I walk to and from anywhere, really. Online shopping can be just as dangerous when you get daily emails tempting you to 50% off this and a Groupon for that. I have unsubscribed from most of their emails except one- Open Sky. They have enlisted a lineup of experts in fields such as food, style, health, and design. Said experts each curate a page of the things they’re digging at the moment (sounds a little like 5 Things huh?) so that you can follow suit. Follow just the peeps that speak to you- and ignore those that don’t. Some of my favs are Julie Morgenstern the organization expert, Padma Lakshmi (the Top Chef host), and fashion guru Cynthia Rowley. This is a super fun shopping experience and maybe, just maybe, someday you’ll see me on there curating what I’m smitten with as well!

Lauderee
My Pilates mentor, Shari Berkowitz often uses interesting cues in her teaching to get me to actually do what she wants. Her latest is that your lower back bones are like French Macaroons! I have a weekly session with her so all of that talk of sweets has given me a wicked craving. Then I heard that Paris’ most famous Macarons (proper French spelling) had come to New York City, and I couldn’t wait any longer to sink my teeth into one. The holidays were suddenly upon me and I got distracted from my Macaron dreams until one day when I was on the Upper East Side, getting my hair cut, I literally ran into the store front. Lauderee first a tea salon, opened in Paris in 1862 and created the first modern Macaron in the early 20th century. For those who have never had the pleasure of having one, it’s two smooth cakes, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, that are joined around a delicious filling and Lauderee’s are one of the best I’ve ever had. While we had to wait in line with NY-ers and Tourists alike, flavors like Black Current Violet, Rose, and Pear with Chestnut flavors beckoned. I was so enamored by the colorful sweets I barely noticed that they have a whole line of beauty products as well including some gorgeous looking candles (I do love a candle!) with scents like Brioche and Caramel with Salted Butter. Yum! Sadly, Lauderee does not ship or let you order online. So you’ll have to make a trip to Paris, New York or the just opened London outpost. Believe me it’s worth the trip and the wait!

Sabon
I’m a smelly kind of gal- not in the “I stink” kind of way but in that I have a very sensitive nose. I smell everything! So, it’s no surprise that I would want pleasant aromas surrounding me at every turn. Such is the case at Sabon. The minute you walk into one of their shops you are welcomed by the fragrance of so many of their lovely concoctions. I go to Sabon every year and stock up on their stellar body scrub, and their bath oil (which is really an emollient shower gel)- but this year they had some new surprises. First up are the emergence of three kinds of wipes. I love wipes since I’m always on the go and it’s much easier (and less messy) to pull them from your bag and wipe away. Sabon has three new kinds- Refreshing Wipes in Patchouli, Lavender, Vanilla great for post workout sweaty-ness, Makeup Remover Wipes in the same scent, and Sunscreen Wipes (which I did see in their store but not on their site). The second treasure I went home with was their Patchouli Vanilla Everyday Perfume. It’s such a nice mix of sexy and sweet that isn’t overpowering. It’s unisex so if you boyfriend likes how you smell- watch out he just might be stealing some when you’re not looking!

Instapaper
I spend copious amounts of time on the computer. When I’m on Twitter or Facebook I often run across an article I want to read but just don’t have the time right then. I would email the link to myself but then find my inbox cluttered with things that I still didn’t have time to address. I found the solution to my pollution- Instapaper. I can drag links from my laptop to the icon on my homepage, add to my list via my iphone, and if I had one- my ipad as well. Then Instapaper has it all laid out like a good assistant would. I can read it from any of my devices or print it out (if that wouldn’t kill trees, but still a helpful option), organize into folders, archive for later reference, or even share to Twitter, FB, or via email. Genius. Setting up an account is free and allows you to save things on your iphone or ipad. The app, for both the iphone and ipad is $4.99, however it enables you to read your articles even without an internet connection and the browse feature is even better on the app where you can browse your friends articles, daily selections from editors. Thank you Instapaper. Thank you.
